Radio Shack TRS-80 Acoustic Modem
Radio Shack, ZDA
- Opis:
[ENG]: Acoustic modems were the first devices used to connect computers over phone lines, before the internet became widespread. Users dialed a number on their telephone, then placed the handset into the modem's acoustic coupler, which converted digital signals into sound waves for transmission. These modems connected to Bulletin Board Systems (BBS). Unlike the modern internet, connecting to a BBS was akin to visiting a single, standalone website, with each BBS offering its unique content and community. If the BBS was in the US, users had to dial a US number to connect. This method was a crucial step in the evolution of digital communications, enabling early data exchange and online communities. The TRS-80 Acoustic Coupler, an essential peripheral for the TRS-80 computer series produced by Tandy Corporation, featured a utilitarian and functional design. The coupler had a rectangular, box-like shape, typically in a grey or beige color, matching the aesthetic of the TRS-80 computers. Its most distinctive feature was the pair of rubber cups on the top, designed to securely hold the handset of a standard telephone. These cups were positioned to align with the earpiece and mouthpiece of the handset, ensuring a snug fit to facilitate the accurate transmission of audio signals.
