Kontrabant 2

- Opis:
[ENG]: Kontrabant is a Slovenian video game for the ZX Spectrum, created by Žiga Turk and Matevž Kmet. Released in 1984 by Radio Študent, it later inspired a sequel, Kontrabant 2. Remarkably, this game was broadcast over the radio 40 years ago, allowing listeners to record the transmission onto a cassette tape, load it into a ZX Spectrum, and play the game. In 2024, our museum collaborated with Radio Študent to commemorate this unique event by re-broadcasting the game on public radio and hosting a special event featuring the game’s creators. The game is a text-based adventure where players must assemble a complete home computer setup by smuggling various components such as a TV, cassette player, and computer into their homes. Players navigate the game’s challenges by creatively interacting with different objects and locations, overcoming both real-world obstacles like law enforcement and fantastical ones including witches and knights. A typical scenario involves the player traveling between cities and villages, engaging in trade to acquire the necessary items. For example, in one city, the player trades beer for a painting with a drunkard, which later helps them obtain a passport in a village using some luck and a dollar. Further challenges arise, such as winning a quiz to secure a briefcase, which is then exchanged for a sword. The sword is traded for a pot of money, which, unfortunately, proves insufficient to buy a TV for the computer. Set in Yugoslavia, of which Slovenia was a part at the time, the game’s theme of smuggling computer components reflects the reality many faced in their quest to own a computer.
