S/390
IBM, ZDA
- Opis:
- Črn mainframe. [SLO]: V zgodnjih dneh računalništva so obstajali le veliki glavni superračunalniki. [ENG]: In the early days of computing, large mainframe supercomputers were the only systems in existence. Even as home computers emerged, mainframes remained dominant due to the limited power of smaller machines. IBM, a major player in the industry for decades, continued to produce mainframes, offering valuable insights into their evolution. Although still sizable, these systems became more manageable, defying predictions that they would become obsolete. The IBM System/390, launched in the 1990s, marked a major advancement in mainframe technology, transitioning from the massive, room-filling machines of the past to more modern and compact designs. Its introduction came at a time when the computing landscape was shifting, and mainframes were no longer the only choice for large-scale processing. Desktop computers soon outsold mainframes, and with the rise of the internet, many believed PC-based servers would replace them. However, manufacturers adapted to business demands by delivering mainframe capabilities in smaller models while maintaining the power of traditional systems. This particular model is the smallest entry-level version of the S/390. The System/390, built for massive transaction processing, remained essential to enterprises, government agencies, and financial institutions. Despite widespread predictions of its decline, the System/390 continued to play a crucial role long after its release. Even in the age of servers and cloud computing, mainframes like the System/390 were indispensable for handling critical, high-volume tasks where reliability was key.
