[ENG]: The Kaypro II, an iconic computer from the 1980s, is often referred to as the "computer with a writer's heart." Notably, renowned science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke used it to compose his novel "2010" and its subsequent film adaptation. This computer was part of a new wave of user-friendly personal computers designed to appeal to novice users looking for an easy-to-use machine for basic productivity tasks. While the Kaypro II enjoyed widespread popularity in the United States, it was less known but still present in Europe. The Kaypro II featured a Zilog Z80 microprocessor, 64 kilobytes of RAM, and two single-sided floppy disk drives, similar to other home computers of the era. However, unlike its cheaper counterparts, it included a CRT display housed in a sturdy metal casing. Initially conceived as an alternative to the Osborne 1—often regarded as the first portable computer—the Kaypro II offered a significantly larger display. Despite being marketed as portable, it weighed 13 kg and had a large case, making it less practical for mobility. Consequently, most users kept it on their desks. Nonetheless, the Kaypro II surpassed the Osborne 1 in popularity, establishing Kaypro as a major player in the computer manufacturing industry at the time. Operating on the CP/M operating system, it boasted a vast software library but lacked significant hardware expansion options. Affectionately nicknamed the "can" due to its appearance, the Kaypro II became a beloved first computer for many Americans. Its design allowed for easy repairs, as all the chips on the mainboard were socketed rather than soldered. Despite its success, Kaypro couldn't keep pace with the rapidly evolving PC market and ultimately went out of business by the end of the 1990s.
